Health Benefits of Fenugreek Consumption
Fenugreek has a beneficial effect on a number of organs and systems in the human body.
Controls blood glucose levels and is used as an aid in people suffering from diabetes, atherosclerosis, helps in beriberi (lack of vitamin B1).
It lowers triglycerides in people with type 2 diabetes. There are still some controversies about its lowering effect on total cholesterol.
Fenugreek is extremely beneficial to women because it contains diosgenin and isoflavones with estrogen-like properties that help reduce unpleasant sensations and cramps in PMS (premenstrual syndrome). The same ingredients alleviate some of the menopausal symptoms. Fenugreek can also be used by nursing mothers as it stimulates the production of breast milk.
The question of the effect of fenugreek on male sex hormones is different. There are quite controversial studies on the subject, the results of which vary in both extremes and refer mainly to standardized fenugreek extracts and are not adequately transportable to spices.
Health risks of fenugreek consumption
Fenugreek is safe when taken in small quantities as a food spice or as a food supplement at the indicated doses. Systemic intake of a number of times higher than the indicated amounts would cause stomach upset, diarrhea, painful gas, or allergic reactions in more sensitive individuals.
It is not recommended to be taken by pregnant women in the form of an additive and especially in quantities greater than those in the diet as it may cause early contractions and premature birth.
To be used with caution by diabetics taking blood glucose lowering drugs as their combination with fenugreek may lead to hypoglycaemia. Since it has the property of slowing blood clotting, it should not be taken with anticoagulants.
