The white thistle (Silybum marianum) is a herbaceous one-year to a two-year-old plant of the Asteraceae family.

It is believed that its active ingredient is the flavonoid complex called silymarin. Silibinin, the most active ingredient of silymarin, can suppress the synthesis of 5-lipoxygenase, which is involved in the formation of free radicals, clears hydroxyl radicals and suppresses tumor necrosis factor (TNF).

Numerous scientific developments support the role of white thistle as an antioxidant that reduces free radical formation and affects cell growth and apoptosis (cell death), thus reducing inflammation and maintaining liver tolerance to oxidative stress, including damage caused by toxins such as carbon tetrachloride.
