Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) is an annual herbaceous plant of the buttercup family
(Ranunculaceae), botanically unrelated to caraway. The plant is found in
southwest Asia and parts of the Mediterranean and Africa, where there is a long history of
use, as an herb and spice, being valued for its health benefits.
Black cumin seeds are a source of many useful substances such as proteins, alkaloids
(nigelicins and nigeledin), saponins (α-hederin) fixed and essential oil.
Black cumin oil contains high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as
monounsaturated fatty acids. Black cumin oil contains various
bioactive molecules such as thymoquinone (which features strong antioxidant and
